Chapter Nine
Barbie
âYou look well, George.â Mrs. Lexington was older but still refined.
âThank you, Mrs. Lexington. You are looking radiant, as usual.â
âOh, youâre such a charmer.â
âIâm sorry to drop in on you after all these years,â I said. âI was walking and found myself on your street. It seemed like an invisible hand directed me.â
âYou are always welcome here. You know that.â She motioned for me to follow her into the lounge.
âAnd Mr. Lexington is well, I hope?â
Her faced darkened slightly. âHe passed three years ago. Heart attack. It was hard on all of us.â
âIâm sorry to hear that. I didnât know.â I leaned forward, unsure how I should act.
âThere was no way for you to know. I miss him.â
âAnd Barbie?â I asked as casually as I could, but my heart was racing.
âSheâs got two lovely children. Divorced, unfortunately, but coping well.â
âPlease send her my regards. I havenât seen or heard from her since, you know, then.â All I could think about was that she wasnât married.
âTell her yourself. Sheâll be back any time now. She likes to take them for a walk before their nap time.â
âOh,â I said. My mouth felt like it had glue in it. âHow old are her children?â
âSeven and five. Both boys. Lovely children. I know it isnât under the best of circumstances, but Iâm glad to have them around me.â
âIâm sure. They say children are the investment and grandchildren are the dividends. You are just reaping what is your due.â I had heard it before and thought it was clever. It was the first time I was able to say that nugget in conversation.
Barbieâs mother dabbed her eyes lightly and smiled. I took that as a good sign.
I heard the keys in the door and then the sound of children being undressed and straining to be let free. Two streaks of energy burst into the room, immaculately dressed, and jumped into Mrs. Lexingtonâs arms.
âSee? They are adorable.â
Just as quickly, they disappeared.
âOnly one cookie each,â a voice called after them. Barbie walked in, flushed and smiling. When her eyes fell on me, her smile froze. âGeorge?â
I stood up. âBarbie.â
She came towards me and gave me a kiss on each cheek. âWhy are you here? Is everything okay?â
âI was in the area and thought Iâd pop in. Iâm sorry to hear about your father.â I didnât say anything about her divorce.
âThank you. You are kind to say that.â
âI liked him.â
âHe liked you.â
We were silent for a moment as we took each other in.
âI guess I should be going. I donât want to take up too much of your time.â
âWill I see you again?â she asked.
âIf you want,â I said. âIâm in town most of the time. Perhaps we can take in a dinner and a show?â
âSounds perfect.â She was smiling and I remembered why I fell in love with her all those years ago.
I picked her up with a limo from her house and we went to see West Side Story and then had dinner at Bond 45.
